Website vs Social Media: Which Should You Invest In?

Jay McLeod • 4 November 2026

If you're a small business owner trying to attract more customers online, you've probably wondered where you should be spending your time and money.

Should you invest in a professional website? Or is having a Facebook and Instagram presence enough?

It's a common question, particularly for smaller businesses working with limited marketing budgets.

Social media makes it easy to connect with customers, promote your services and build brand awareness. But a website provides something equally important: a place where potential customers can find information about your business, explore your services and get in touch.

So, which is the better investment?

The short answer is both have an important role to play. Let's look at why.

1. The Benefits of Social Media for Small Businesses

Social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn have become important marketing tools for businesses of all sizes.

They provide an easy way to communicate with customers, share updates and promote your products or services.

Building Brand Awareness

Social media helps get your business in front of people who might not have heard of you before.

Regular posts, photographs, videos and updates help people become familiar with your business and what you offer.

Connecting With Customers

Unlike a traditional website, social media allows customers to interact directly with your business.

They can:

  • Ask questions through comments or messages.
  • Share your posts with friends and family.
  • Leave recommendations and reviews.
  • Keep up with your latest news and promotions.

Affordable Marketing

Setting up a Facebook or Instagram business profile is free.

You can also reach potential customers through organic posts without necessarily spending money on advertising.

If you want to expand your reach, paid advertising allows you to target specific audiences, locations and interests.

The downside? You're relying on a platform you don't control. Algorithms change, organic reach fluctuates, and your access to customers depends on the platform's rules.

2. Why Your Business Needs a Website

Think of your website as your online home.

It's a central place where potential customers can learn about your business, understand what you offer and decide whether they want to work with you.

Unlike social media, your website gives you much greater control over how your business is presented.

You Own Your Online Presence

Your website sits under your own domain name and provides a permanent online destination for your business.

Social media platforms can change their features, algorithms and policies at any time.

Your website gives you a more stable foundation that isn't dependent on a particular social media platform.

It Builds Credibility and Trust

When someone discovers your business, there's a good chance they'll search for your website before making contact.

A professional website helps demonstrate that your business is established, trustworthy and serious about what it does.

You can showcase:

  • Your services and products.
  • Customer testimonials.
  • Previous projects and examples of your work.
  • Your experience and qualifications.
  • Contact details and business information.

It Helps Customers Find You on Google

One of the biggest advantages of having a website is the opportunity to attract customers through organic search.

With effective Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), your website can appear when people search for the products or services you offer.

For example, someone searching for "accountant in Christchurch" or "heat pump servicing Christchurch" may discover your business through Google.

Social media profiles can also appear in search results, but a properly optimised website gives you much more opportunity to target relevant search terms.

You Have More Control Over Your Content

Your website allows you to organise information exactly how you want it.

You can create dedicated pages for individual services, publish blog articles, add enquiry forms and provide detailed information without being restricted by a social media platform's layout.

3. Website vs Social Media: What's the Difference?

Both channels offer different benefits. Here's a quick comparison.

The important thing to remember is that these channels aren't competitors.

They work best when they're used together.

4. Why You Shouldn't Rely on Social Media Alone

It's tempting to think a Facebook business page is all you need, particularly when you're just starting out.

However, relying entirely on social media can create some problems.

You're dependent on algorithms.

Just because someone follows your Facebook page doesn't mean they'll see every post you publish. Social media platforms decide what appears in people's feeds.

Your content has a limited lifespan.

A social media post might attract attention for a short period before disappearing down someone's newsfeed.

A useful website article, on the other hand, can continue attracting visitors through Google search for months or even years.

You have limited control.

You're working within someone else's platform, which means changes to features, policies or account access can affect your ability to reach customers.

Social media is excellent for building relationships, but it shouldn't be your only online presence.

5. The Best Approach: Use Your Website and Social Media Together

Rather than choosing one over the other, think about how they can support each other.

For example:

  1. Publish a helpful blog article on your website.
  2. Share a link to that article on Facebook or LinkedIn.
  3. Encourage followers to visit your website for more information.
  4. Include clear contact details and an enquiry form on your website.
  5. Use social media to share updates, customer testimonials and examples of your work.

This creates a simple marketing cycle.

Social media helps people discover your business, while your website provides the information they need to take the next step.

You can also use your website to build your social media following by including links to your profiles.

6. What If You Have a Limited Marketing Budget?

If you're a small business just getting started, you probably don't have an unlimited marketing budget.

So where should you begin?

My recommendation would be to establish a professional website first, even if it's relatively simple.

You don't necessarily need a huge website with dozens of pages. A well-designed website that clearly explains what you do, who you help and how customers can contact you is a great starting point.

Once your website is established, build your social media presence alongside it.

You can start with free social media accounts and gradually introduce paid advertising as your business grows.

The important thing is to have somewhere to send potential customers when they discover you.

So, Which Should Your Business Invest In?

If you had to choose just one, I'd generally recommend starting with a website.

Why?

Because your website is the foundation of your online presence. It gives customers somewhere to find reliable information about your business, provides opportunities to attract organic traffic through Google and gives you greater control over how your business is presented.

Social media is an excellent way to build awareness and connect with customers, but it works best when it's supporting a professional website rather than replacing one.

The best investment isn't choosing between a website and social media. It's making sure they work together.
